Summer Term 2012

Summer Term 2012

30 April - 16 July

The new term has started but we are still taking enrolments on some of our courses, including our Saturday workshops and lots of 5 week courses starting in June. You can view details of everything on offer in the courses section of this website or you can view a full PDF of the prospectus here. Prospectuses are available from the Folk House and around town. You can enrol by paying over the phone with a card, by sending us a cheque with an enrolment form, or you can pop in and see us at reception.

This summer we bring you another jam packed term of courses and workshops. While away the summer days painting in watercolour and writing creatively or spend the longer evenings tasting wine and throwing pots. Rest yourself with Relaxation Training or keep your brain active with Cryptic Crosswords. Immerse yourself in a new language or plunge into the world of Spanish art.

As always, make sure you enrol early as our courses do fill up and we'd hate for you to miss out. Further information on all our courses, workshops, live music, exhibitions and events can be found on our website or by ringing our friendly office staff.

Thank you for your continued support of the Folk House and we look forward to seeing you all soon!

"Still Alive" - an Exhibition of Chlorophyll Print Photographs by Rachel Sokal

Rachel Sokal exhibits a selection of old and new work from her series of ephemeral chlorophyll prints; perhaps the most natural form of photography, where leaves are printed with a photographs using the photosynthetic structures of the plant without chemicals added. By placing images printed on to acetate over the leaf for several days in the sun, the leaf itself becomes the canvas; changing chemically to show the image with startling detail. The leaf is still alive as the photo develops, only drying once the process is over. Just as the leaf had a lifespan, so does the image now printed onto the leaf. The sunlight which made the image will slowly destroy it.

Through this series Rachel explores the links between human and plant bodies, our place within changing ecologies, and the effects of excessive exposure to the sun on living cells; plant, animal or human.

Rachel Sokal is a Bristol based photographer, teacher and Bristol Folk House tutor. She is particularly interested in alternative photographic processes, working with these hands-on techniques to communicate socially and make photography more accessible to a wider range of people. Her most recent work is a series of ephemeral chlorophyll prints, photographs printed onto leaves using only sunlight.

Rachel will discuss her approach to photography and her chlorophyll prints at the Bristol Folk House on Friday 11th May at 7pm.
