Open Write Night

Please join us for the writing equivalent of an open mic night, but with a twist - no preparation. Using ideas from the audience, writers will produce a piece for performance in just 20 minutes.

Come along and write, perform, or just enjoy the show. This piece can take any format desired - play, poem, flashfiction or song for example - and once the twenty minutes are up, the writers can choose whether or not to perform it and be scored by our panel.

There will also be performance to entertain the audience during the writing process.

Tickets £4 in advance, £6 on the door, available from the Folk House and a share of the money will be donated to Pride Bristol.

Sign up from 7pm. Starts 8pm.

6th August 2010 - Café Bar

Carly Ashdown painting

Carly Ashdown exhibition

An exhibition of paintings by Carly Ashdown, an artist using the human form as her main subject matter. She uses paint and other media to create a myriad of emotions which echo the human experience. After completing an arts degree in Leeds in 2004 Carly focused on a new educational path training in Counseling and Psychotherapy at the Tavistock Institute, London.

Feeling a deep kinship to the questioning minds of philosopher Alan Watts and comedian Bill Hicks, Carly was inspired to explore her own relationship to life and particularly the idea of personal transformation. These explorations of how we have come to understand ourselves, the world and our place in it have deeply influenced Carly's art.

"We tend to limit ourselves through our fixed perceptions. My work is an invitation to step into a way of perceiving beyond what we know in our everyday lives."

Remembering the 1950s and 1960s

Can you help us to tell a true story about those important decades for the Celebrating Age Festival?

Come to two free workshops at the Bristol Folk House and work with a writer who wants to explore what life was like in the 50s and 60s, with those who have first hand experience. Special areas of interest are the 60s poetry scene, the world of modern dance, and social attitudes to those who suffered depression, but ALL memories which give a sense of the times will be welcomed.

Share your memories, and contribute to a collaborative creative piece of work for the finale event of the Celebrating Age Festival on the 11th of September at the Colston Hall.

Please attend both workshops if you can, as we will be developing the work over the two sessions.

Wednesday the 8th September, 10am - 12pm

Tea, coffee and cake will be served.

Book early, as places are limited to 12 per workshop.
