Bookbinding Workshop (Open Spine Bindings)
During this workshop, participants will learn how to create two variations of exposed spine binding: the Coptic Binding and French Link Stitch. As the name suggests, these bindings have exposed spines that showcase the stitching work, which is typically hidden behind the cover. Both bindings allow the book to open flat, making them perfect for sketching, note-taking, personalised gifts, or serving as the basis for artists' books. Students will leave the workshop with two hand-bound books and the skills to create more at home, using minimal equipment.
Limited to 8 participants per session. Beginners welcome; suitable for all levels.
The workshop will cover:
- Getting to know the basics of open spine bookbinding
- Folding, stacking and prepunching signatures in preparation for stitching
- Learning how to do a Coptic and a French link binding style
- Attaching the cover to the book
Please bring:
- Scissors or paper knife
- HB Pencil
- Ruler or triangle ruler
Please note: All 10, and 12 week courses have a half term break in the middle. For term dates please visit our Contact us page. We are not open on bank holiday Mondays and any class that falls on these days will be made up at the end of term.

Latecomer
If a course has already started, please call the office as it may be possible to join after the start date. This may only be possible if the course is not already full, if it is not disruptive for the other students and you are aware that you have missed a percentage of the course and the tutor will not have time to catch you up. This will be at discretion of the Folk House. We run our courses termly, so it might be best to start at the beginning of the course.
