This 6 week course covers all things cyanotype and the different results that can be achieved with a range of techniques. Cyanotype is an alternative photographic printing process dating back to the 1800s that produces blue prints, typically using coated paper and light. In this course, we will not only explore the cyanotype process using a range of different papers, but we will also be covering how to make cyanotypes on different textiles and fabrics, as well as experimenting with wet cyanotypes and cyanotype toning.
By the end of the course, the goal is to have a mini portfolio of cyanotypes in a range of different mediums and techniques that you can be proud of.
This course is well suited for beginners as well as those with more experience. We will be using a range of materials to make our images, including but not limited to flowers, leaves, negatives (digital or film), and other translucent objects.
This course is in the darkroom, it is very much a standing course and in a small space.
Please bring materials for making cyanotypes - please bring digital negatives, drawings or writings on transparency or tracing paper, flowers, leaves, etc.
Please bring a watercolour or blotting pad to transport your work will still be wet at the end of each session.
For the printing on fabric section (week 5), please bring something to print on - a t-shirt, tote bag, fabric mask, scarf, pillow case, flag, etc. - as long as it is white or light in colour and made from natural fibers. Synthetic materials will not work.
A limited amount of Bristol paper, Watercolour paper, and fabric swatches will be provided, but if you would like to use additional paper types or materials you need to bring your own.
Please bring an apron to protect your clothes.
The prints you make in the class will be wet at the end of the session, so please bring something to transport wet prints or materials in - either a carrier bag or blotting book (watercolour pads work great for this).
Please note: All 10, and 12 week courses have a half term break in the middle. For term dates please visit our Contact us page. We are not open on bank holiday Mondays and any class that falls on these days will be made up at the end of term.

Latecomer
If a course has already started, please call the office as it may be possible to join after the start date. This may only be possible if the course is not already full, if it is not disruptive for the other students and you are aware that you have missed a percentage of the course and the tutor will not have time to catch you up. This will be at discretion of the Folk House. We run our courses termly, so it might be best to start at the beginning of the course.
