Have you ever wanted to try life drawing but did not know where to start? Or maybe you have felt intimidated by big, untutored drop-in classes? Whether you have never picked up a pencil or have not drawn since school, we all have to start somewhere and this is the perfect place to do it.
Join our fun, relaxed and beginner-friendly 5 week course designed to build your confidence and develop essential skills. With no pressure, no judgment, just creativity, in a supportive atmosphere with a focus on wellbeing. You will leave feeling inspired, accomplished, and ready for more.
We will start with the absolute basics, combining playful experiments with practical techniques to help you capture the human form. Expect warm-up exercises, quick sketches and longer studies with a professional nude model. We will also explore inspiring artists and share tips and tricks to help you get the most out of your drawings. By the end of the course, you will have the skills and confidence to go it alone.
Please bring:
- A2 Drawing Paper - 15 - 20 sheets This pad or something similar will be fine - https://www.theworks.co.uk/p/sketch-books/a2-crawford-and-black-artist-sketch-pad-15-sheets/5052089333949.html
- Masking tape or bulldog clip
- Drawing pencils (2B, 4B, 6B or anything you have)
- Charcoal Sticks Rubber / Putty Rubber / Pencil Sharper
Later in the course, we will have fun with other materials, so if you have any of the following, you can bring those along when instructed by the tutor: soft pastels, graphite sticks, coloured pencils and markers. These are not essential, the tutor will have some to share, please don’t go out and buy them
Please get in touch if you have any additional needs that would be helpful for us to know about, and we will try to arrange adjustments for you to better access the workshop. If you need to bring a carer with you, please let us know in advance so we can ensure there is enough space. Email us on admin@bristolfolkhouse.co.uk or call us on 01179262987.
Please note: All 10, and 12 week courses have a half term break in the middle. For term dates please visit our ‘Contact us’ page. We are not open on bank holiday Monday’s and any class that falls on these days will be made up at the end of term.

Latecomer
If a course has already started, please call the office as it may be possible to join after the start date. This may only be possible if the course is not already full, if it is not disruptive for the other students and you are aware that you have missed a percentage of the course and the tutor will not have time to catch you up. This will be at the discretion of the Folk House. We run our courses termly, so it might be best to start at the beginning of the course.
