Lore and Land exhibition

Lore and Land is an exhibition exploring reimagined worlds of folk customs, rituals, and the rural in contemporary art. Showcasing South-West based artists Libby Bove, Gemma Dunnell, Abigail Tinnion, and Asha Uberoi.

The works shown in 'Lore and Land' embark on a journey beyond the confines of traditional folklore, offering a fresh reimagining of age-old stories for a new generation. Drawing inspiration from a myriad of sources, from the mystique of the occult to the intricate beauty of nature, the mechanisation of machinery, and the haunting allure of lost artefacts,  this exhibition serves as a poignant exploration of how we relate to our environment and to each other.

Libby Bove

Libby Bove is an artist, designer and folklorist. Her Practice draws from folk culture, archival collections, road life and the occult. Through the mediums of costume, photography and storytelling her work explores myth making and the magic of the everyday, while also touching on themes of dystopia and ecological collapse.  Dancing about at the crossroads of fact and fiction, her works suggest surreal alternative worlds and incongruous comic tableaux.

Gemma Dunnell

Gemma Dunnell is an illustrator and writer interested in how to engage people with the natural world. 

“This engagement is particularly important in our time of climate crisis. Through art, we can reignite the play and fascination we may have had with nature as children. We are able to see it through fresh eyes, inspiring in ourselves that sense of childlike wonder again. Only when we feel wonder, and understand how fantastical nature really is, can we truly care about its loss and want to do something about it. “

Gemma’s work is often inspired by fungi, fantasy, and British folklore. They love to play with collage and historical photography, turning the everyday into the surreal.  Often working with print and watercolour to depict nature in new ways.

Abigail Tinnion

Abigail Tinnion is a  Visual Artist and Folklorist based in the south west of England.

“Through my work I aim to reconnect the spectator to the ancient, organic and unknowable. I’m interested in dirt, bones, ruins, spirits, dreams, rivers, creatures, transmutation, gods and forgotten things.”

Asha Uberoi

Asha Uberoi is a multimedia artist with a fascination in the collective understanding of history, as shared in the research and curation of artefacts across British museums. Working predominantly in ceramics, textile, and painting, she crafts characterisations of various ancient forms, taking them out of the public museum and into the privacy of the studio – a space for the reimagining of historic worlds. Each of her sculpted objects and painted motifs are made lively with a sense of agency, and wait to tell their ancient tales.
