Tutor: Dr Maeve Marta O Donnell
Medieval European artists were faced with the difficult task of translating many complex ideas into visual forms that could be understood by the common viewer. What the study of medieval art clearly shows us is that the medieval artist relished and stepped up to that challenge. Medieval art is full of remarkable creative solutions from dynamic and bright abstraction to carefully planned combinations of media and the installations of such works into sites of ceremony and pageantry.
This workshop will provide an overview of medieval art aimed at contemporary art practitioners, covering the gamut of media used in the medieval period and helping students to 'read' the meaning behind medieval materials, forms and symbols. We will also discuss the role and position of artists in medieval society and the influence of non-European cultures on the medieval artist. Students are also welcome to share some of their current projects so that specific medieval works may be shown that speak to those projects in particular.
Please bring a notebook and pen.

Latecomer
If a course has already started, please call the office as it may be possible to join after the start date. This may only be possible if the course is not already full, if it is not disruptive for the other students and you are aware that you have missed a percentage of the course and the tutor will not have time to catch you up. This will be at discretion of the Folk House. We run our courses termly, so it might be best to start at the beginning of the course.
