In this workshop we will be looking at the factors that make up a still-life painting. Working from a photograph we will explore all the basics of oil painting to get you started in this exciting painting medium. This class is suitable for beginners and intermediates.
These are the recommended colours that I use:
Titanium white
Cadmium yellow
Yellow ochre
Cadmium red
Alizarin crimson
Burnt sienna
Burnt umber
Viridian Cerulean blue
Ultramarine blue
Ivory black
Windsor and Newton's Winton range are good, as are Daler Rowney's Georgian range.
I do not advise buying paint sets from places such as Lidl, Aldi, The Works etc. as they will not be of the quality needed to get the results you will want.
A selection of bristle brushes of various sizes, the filbert shape is the most useful.
Also a couple of softer synthetic brushes are useful for blending as well. Low odour thinners, no turps. (Sansodor is a good choice and widely available.)
Linseed oil or other painting medium
Two palette cups or 2 small jam jars
A palette, tear off paper palettes are handy
A3 or A4 oil painting sketch pad ( I use and recommend the Seawhite oil painting pad A3 size, its the one with a purple front cover. it is available from Bristol Fine Art on Park Row).
Also a few extras:
pencil-rubber, some kitchen roll is very handy.
Please note: All 10, and 12 week courses have a half term break in the middle. For term dates please visit our Contact us page. We are not open on bank holiday Mondays and any class that falls on these days will be made up at the end of term.

Latecomer
If a course has already started, please call the office as it may be possible to join after the start date. This may only be possible if the course is not already full, if it is not disruptive for the other students and you are aware that you have missed a percentage of the course and the tutor will not have time to catch you up. This will be at discretion of the Folk House. We run our courses termly, so it might be best to start at the beginning of the course.
