Ian cannot remember how long he has taught wine appreciation at Bristol Folk House, but recalls that the first classroom he was allocated was in an annex above Chilcott the jeweller. The swingtop desks were a nightmare!
Ian spent 20 years in the wine trade, advising hotels and restaurants on their wine lists and visiting vineyards in Europe and California. He also runs classes at the Ridings Academy in Winterbourne. Ian takes the stuffiness out of wine tasting and concentrates on how the character of a wine is influenced by grape variety, climate and winemaking techniques. He prefers the examples he provides to be individual in character, rather than mass production or supermarket styles.
The world of wine is vast and constantly changing. Ian is happy to concede that he takes every opportunity to continue his own learning!
