This beginners garden design course offers an opportunity to understand the basic process of designing a garden using an area outside the Folkhouse.
Week one you will learn about brief writing and zoning diagrams. Both things are essential for understanding what elements you want in the garden and where these elements should go.
Week two you will explore key design principles, a handful of garden styles and ways in which you can communicate your design, using plans perspectives, sections and inspiration palettes.
Week three you will learn how to survey an area outside the Folkhouse. Using simple measuring techniques you will create a to scale birds eye view of the area, including key elements such as soil type, aspect, microclimate, important views and existing plants and trees.
Week four you will create your garden concept. Tracing zoning diagrams on top of your survey and building on top of this to make a visually attractive plan that communicates your design.
Week five explores what materials and plants you would like to use in your garden. You will produce a materials plan that shows which materials go where and a planting plan and palette. We will also look at how to order your plants from a nursery and where you could go locally to get plants.

Latecomer
If a course has already started, please call the office as it may be possible to join after the start date. This may only be possible if the course is not already full, if it is not disruptive for the other students and you are aware that you have missed a percentage of the course and the tutor will not have time to catch you up. This will be at discretion of the Folk House. We run our courses termly, so it might be best to start at the beginning of the course.
